James Donald Young, age 82 of Shoal Creek Road, Burnsville, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, July 6th, 2021. A native of Yancey County, he was the son of the late James “Red Jim” Leland Young and Mary Hughes Young. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Young Bailey.
Don was a member and deacon of Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Don worked for 27 years at Glen Raven Mills and later became a partner with Four Square Construction and Complete Care Cleaners. He was a gifted carpenter, loved working on his farm, tending to the cows, and gardening. He will be remembered for his strong faith, gentle spirit, and never–ending patience.
Surviving is his wife of 62 years, Marilyn Shuford Young; daughters, Renee Woody (Ricky) and Regina Hensley; grandchildren: Nick Woody (Rae), Leslie Hilliard (Shane), Jake Woody (Tiffany), Nathan Hensley (Maggie) and Andrew Hensley; great–grandchildren: Conner Woody, Cale Woody, Hudson Hilliard, Hollyn Hilliard, Ava Woody, Mia Woody and due in September, Ila Woody. Don cherished his extended family, church family, and friends.
The family will receive friends and loved ones Friday, July 9th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, July 10th at 11:00 a.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church. Reverend Ricky Woody, Reverend Dick Westbrook and Reverend Meritt Taylor will officiate. Burial will follow the funeral service on Saturday in the Pete Young Cemetery in Burnsville. Pallbearers will be Gary Shuford, Jack Hensley, Tommy Shuford, Richard Shuford, Jeff Shuford, Randall Shuford, Brian Shuford and Ronnie Bailey.
