Farrell Hughes Obituary

Farrell Hughes, age 89 of Burnsville, went home on Sunday, July 11th, 2021 at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born February 6th, 1932 in the Brush Creek Community to the late Fonze and Susie Fox Hughes.

He began working as a young man logging with his father in the mountains near his childhood home.

On Christmas Eve of 1951, he married his wife of 69 years, Anna Lou Laughrun Hughes. Together, they began many business ventures from a livestock feed mill, a gas station, a trucking business, and farm equipment sales to the construction and operation of Mountain View Motel.

In 1968, he would find his ultimate calling, as he began building homes and developing land, doing most of the work himself for the first several years, while his wife took care of the administrative side of the business. They continued that business as a family with their two children until present day.

Farrell took great joy in tending the soil by growing apples, grapes and an enormous garden, most of which he always shared with his friends and neighbors.

He found great enjoyment in his champion show horses, his Angus cattle and the farm he dreamed of as a young child.

His true pride and joy were his children and family; his loving wife, Anna Lou Hughes; his son, Warren Hughes (Patti), who served as Yancey County Clerk of Court and then as a District Court Judge; his daughter, Vickie Hughes, who he traveled countless miles and worked with daily, both of Burnsville; his granddaughters, Crystal Letterman Capps (Jake) of Burnsville, Lilly Hughes Humen (Bobby) of Charleston, SC; and great–granddaughter, Emerson Caroline Humen.

Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 13th at West Burnsville Baptist Church at 7 p.m. The family will receive friends and loved ones two hours prior to service time. Reverend Ricky Ray will officiate. Interment will take place Wednesday, July 14th in the Fairview Cemetery at Horton Hill at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Feed–A–Child. As our daddy would have wanted to help someone, if possible. He said many times “The good Lord has blessed this poor ol’ dumb country boy and it’s my obligation to give back when I can.”
